the Monument [the Monument]
a stone column in central London set up in memory of the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was designed by Christopher Wren and built in 1671–7. Its height (202 feet/61.5 metres) is believed to be the distance from the column to the place where the fire started. There are 311 steps up it, which visitors can climb.
